Duties:

Wayne State University Libraries (Detroit, MI) Department of New Media and Information Technology seeks a full-time Librarian I to serve as Digital Projects Librarian.

Essential Functions:

- Serve as project manager for digitization projects, coordinating digitization plans and responsibilities with partners, and communicating with faculty to understand and integrate their research and teaching goals.
- Provide operational planning and day-to-day management of the Library System's digital collections.
- Oversee converting textual, image, audio, and video materials into digital form; and migration of digital objects into new formats.
- Ensure high availability and quality of services by developing, configuring, migrating, and the daily operation of web content and applications and systems along with other staff in the Digital Library Services team members.
- Continuously improve access to digital collections, including interface and searching features and metadata system design.
- Participate positively as a member of the Digital Library Services team and other working groups to develop/write policies and procedures, facilitate decision-making, resolve problems, implement assigned projects, improve customer service and ensure smooth delivery of services.
- Communicate effectively and positively with unit management, team members, and throughout the library system, providing updates, reports and other assigned tasks within timeframes to ensure that unit and library system goals and objectives are met and services are delivered efficiently and effectively.
- Assist with day-to-day management of our institutional repository.
- Assist with the day-to-day management of the library and affiliated websites.
- Monitor professional trends in assigned area and make recommendations such that services and resources are kept up to date with current practices and professional standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

- Master's degree from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to work well as part of a team;
- Demonstrated ability to manage technical projects within a large library setting;
- Demonstrated commitment to customer service;
- Ability to think critically in analyzing problems and developing resourceful solutions;
- Ability to manage a complex workload, prioritize tasks and complete work on time with minimum supervision;
- Experience in multi-platform (Unix, Windows, and Mac) environments;
- Working knowledge of HMTL and other Web related markup languages, features, and protocols (example: XHTML, XML, RSS, CSS);
- Working knowledge of at least one or more of the following scripting or programming languages: PERL, PHP, Java, JavaScript, bash;
- Experience working with various image/multimedia formats (example: jpeg, gif, tif, swf, mov, avi, flv);
- Experience with relational databases and handling a variety of data formats including either XML or SGML;
- Basic understanding of copyright issues related to digitization and scholarly communications;
- Broad knowledge of current digitization trends including issues relating to the application of metadata to digital objects.

Preferred:

- Experience with MySQL and FileMaker Pro;
- Experience with photography and scanning in a library or archival environment;
- Experience with OAI, metadata, Dublin Core, VRA, etc.;
- Experience working with a LAMP environment;
- Experience with a digital library product such as DLXS, ContentDM, or Greenstone.
